They Lie

They Lie – Interactive VR film

They Lie is the result of the Canon VR group’s work during the outdoor Film Spring Open 2022 and was created by Jacek Urbańczyk. The group’s task was to create an interactive VR feature film using Canon’s VR180 imaging tools and the Interactive Training System (ISS) developed by CinematicVR. The exercise consisted of creating an interactive script, having the right form and allowing for interactive story branching, producing and post-production of the VR film and creating a finished, interactive viewable/playable VR film using tools designed for producing interactive VR training.

Idea

The interactive film was inspired by the large number of bots trying to access a closed Facebook group used for ongoing communication by participants of the Canon VR workshop group. The project combines elements of a 3D scan of a hotel room made with a phone, motion capture animation and a 3D scan of Jack’s face, animation rendered on a 3D engine with the support of a group led by Maciek Kunach, voiceovers generated using synthesisers and a VR live-action film in VR180 format. The intro to the film was created in collaboration with Kuba Sobek’s editing and CGI group.

ISS

All film elements of the project were entered into the web-based interactivity editor available in the ISS admin panel and programmed accordingly. The film was divided into linear segments and segments in which the viewer/player could choose one of the programmed story paths. The final version of the film was presented during a final screening of the projects by all participants in the FSO workshops.
