Excuses

The protagonist of my film is 12-year-old Julita. Julita is creative, loves films and dreams of being an actress. Julita is diagnosed with ADHD, in October the school made a decision that Julita should have independent study, since then Julita has not been going to school. Julita has dreams like most teenage girls. She wants to spend time with her friends, she does tiktoks. Julita wants to be an actress, but quickly loses interest in her new activities.

The theme of the documentary is loneliness caused by being different. Julita’s diagnosis is an important element of the film, hopefully capturing how difficult it is for her to fulfil her dreams when she stands apart from her peers, when the world is constructed in such a way that it ignores the needs of the protagonist. The theme is Julita’s world shown through her experiences and her dreams, which I hope she manages to fulfil in this film.

I would like to show the protagonist locked in her situation/ in her room in the Wilanów housing estate, her relationships that she tries to build with her friends through her behaviour – boredom and loneliness, but also problems related to ADHD like sensory overload. The film will slowly open up through the road to fulfilling her dreams. The final scene will be Julita flying (vfx) – this was her answer to the question of what superpower she would like to have.

The film is about neurodiversity and the loneliness that this otherness brings with it, so I would like to use experimental elements (visual and sound) to show Julita’s world through her experience. These elements are ASMR – pleasant sounds that soothe the protagonist, but also those that distract. Juxtaposing images like a very busy street with how the brain of a person with ADHD works during a stressful situation. I would like to visually show the anger that builds up in Julita as she recounts how she was unfairly removed from school. The film focuses on Julita and her view of the world, the subjectivity of the camera showing situations from her perspective. In the film I look for emotions, not situations.

I am developing the film at the Laboratory of Ideas – Skok w Dok, which prepares projects aimed at young audiences. I’m at the documentation stage, I’ve already had my first shoots with Julita, I accompanied her to boxing lessons and we had acting rehearsals. In January, I will visit more heroines with my camera. Due to my participation in the Jump in the Dok programme, I am obliged to prepare a trailer for the film, which will be part of the presentation (pitching) at the Millennium Docs Against Gravity festival in May.

I don’t have a producer yet and for the time being I am shooting on my own, but I am keen to collaborate with an editor/editor and a sound designer/sound engineer (sound design).
