The workshops are a comprehensive programme preparing students for entrance examinations to the Film Production course at Polish film schools (PWSFTviT in Łódź, Cinematography Departments, Academies of Theatre and Film Arts).

WE ARE EXTENDING THE RECRUITMENT FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE COURSE UNTIL THE END OF MARCH 2026.

The programme combines:

  • systematic online work (analysis of materials, development of film language),
  • intensive classroom classes in Krakow just before the exams,
  • individual preparation of portfolios and exam strategies.

The workshops are intended both for people without formal film education and for candidates with photographic or film experience who want to organise their craft and cinematographic thinking.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

STAGE I – ONLINE CLASSES (FROM THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY)

2 meetings per month × 5 hours

1. Introduction to thinking in film images

  • What is film image production?
  • The role of the cinematographer in film
  • Visual language and image narration

2. Film image analysis

  • Analysis of excerpts from feature films and documentaries
  • Light, frame, camera movement, colour
  • Conscious visual decisions

3. Fundamentals of filmmaking

  • Frame composition
  • Natural and artificial light
  • The relationship between image and drama

4. Developing an individual language

  • Working on visual sensitivity
  • Inspiration and conscious borrowing
  • Building your own creative path

STAGE II – PREPARING THE PORTFOLIO

  • Discussion of film school examination requirements
  • Selection of photographic and film materials
  • Individual consultations
  • Building a coherent narrative for the portfolio
  • Eliminating formal and substantive errors

STAGE III – EXAM STRATEGY

  • What the film production exam looks like
  • The most common mistakes made by candidates
  • How to talk to the examination board
  • How to present your work and creative thinking
  • Working under time pressure and stress

STAGE IV – CLASSROOM-BASED CLASSES (KRAKOW, SPRING)

Intensive meetings immediately before the examinations

  • Practical camera work exercises
  • Analysis of participants’ work
  • Final corrections to portfolios
  • Examination rehearsals (simulations)
  • Individual consultations

ORGANISATION OF CLASSES

  • Classes are held twice a month, 5 hours each.
  • Hybrid form: online + in-person.
  • Small, intimate group.
  • Workshop and consultation work.

SUMMARY

This is not a workshop on “how to take nice film photos”.
It is conscious preparation for exams and a career in filmmaking.

Tutor

Marcin Koszałka – Cinematographer, screenwriter and director of documentary and feature films. Habilitated doctor of film arts, graduate and lecturer at Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty at University of Silesia, a member of the Polish Film Academy and the European Film Academy.

One of the most recognized documentary filmmakers of his generation, who has made films such as: “Such a Nice Boy I Gave Birth to”, “Declaration of Immortality” or “You’ll Be a Legend, Man”. In 2015, he made his feature debut with the thriller “The Red Spider”, which premiered in the main competition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

He has done camerawork for many Polish feature films. He was awarded twice at the Polish Film Festival, for “The Welts” (2004) by Magdalena Piekorz and “The Reverse” (2009) by Borys Lankosz.

In his personal life: mountaineer, climber and marathon runner.
