For the third time, we invite directors, composers and editors to join our unique workshops within the Film Music Composition Group, led by the outstanding composer Paweł Lucewicz!

This is a unique opportunity to explore the art of film music composition in depth, both from an artistic and technical perspective.

Film music is the art of encounter — between the composer’s individual sensitivity and the director’s vision, between emotion and narrative, intuition and craftsmanship. It is an area of creativity in which music does not exist independently, but becomes part of a larger story, helping to create meaning, build tension and guide the audience through the world of the film.

During the workshops, we will explore the process of creating music for film — from the first conversation with the director, through analysing the material and searching for a musical concept, to preparing the final soundtrack. We will consider how to read a film from a composer’s perspective, when music should lead the narrative and when it should give way to the image, how to build a creative relationship with the director and producer, and how to translate emotions and ideas into musical language. We will also discuss how to make artistic decisions within specific dramatic and production requirements.

The workshops will also cover the practical aspects of creating music for picture. Participants will learn methods for planning and organising projects in a DAW environment, the principles of synchronising music with image, preparing cue lists and project sessions, as well as working with sample libraries and virtual instruments. We will also discuss creating original sounds, preparing mock-ups, orchestration, organising recording sessions, and preparing materials for mixing and final production.

The most important element of the workshops will be the participants’ practical work on selected film materials. Each participant will receive composition assignments based on specific scenes and creative briefs reflecting situations encountered in professional film work. The process will include analysing the material, developing a musical concept, composing, producing and presenting the results. Consultations and individual feedback sessions will be provided at every stage.

The Film Music Composition Group will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other creative groups working during the Film Spring Open Workshops, composing music for films and projects created by the participants.

Paweł Lucewicz – film music composer, pianist and music producer.

His credits include more than 60 film and television productions, including Carte Blanche (dir. Jacek Lusiński), Czarny Mercedes (dir. Janusz Majewski), Sami Swoi – Początek (dir. Artur Żmijewski), Disco Polo (dir. Maciej Bochniak), W jak Morderstwo (dir. Piotr Mularuk), Podatek od miłości (dir. Bartek Ignaciuk), as well as the TV series Skazana, Minuta Ciszy, Ludzie i Bogowie, Pod Powierzchnią, Szadź and Stulecie Winnych.

His score for the latest adaptation of The Quack (Znachor), directed by Michał Gazda, earned him numerous nominations and awards, including the FMF 2023 Soundtrack of the Year Award, Best Original Score for a Drama Film at the Movie Music UK Awards 2023, and Breakthrough Composer of the Year, awarded by the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA).
