How to Turn Music into Images? The Music Video Group at Film Spring Open 2026 will be led by director Olga Czyżykiewicz!

How do you translate music into images? How do you build a music video concept that does more than simply illustrate the lyrics, creating instead its own world, dramaturgy and visual language?

During the 21st Film Spring Open Workshop, participants in the Music Video Group led by Olga Czyżykiewicz will go through the entire process of creating a professional music video — from the initial interpretation of the song and script development, through production preparation and filming, to editing and colour grading.

This year, the starting point for the group’s work will be Karolina Czarnecka’s song “My Great Great Grandson Alien.” The artist will take part in the music video shoot.

The song explores the future, intergenerational dialogue, the passing of time and the world we leave behind for future generations. In the brief prepared by Karolina Czarnecka, she also evokes the image of “a fairy tale about the end of our era” and suggests that the Alien can be treated as a metaphor for an unwanted part of ourselves — something foreign that may, in fact, need to be accepted and embraced. At the same time, the artist leaves participants considerable freedom of interpretation, indicating a symbolic and epic journey through the city as just one possible direction.

Participants will not be given a ready-made concept. Together with Olga Czyżykiewicz, they will search for their own visual language for the song and build the idea from the ground up.

From Music to Image

The first stage of the workshop will focus on what Olga Czyżykiewicz describes as the “biology of the script” — analysing the music and lyrics, interpreting the song and searching for the images that can grow out of it.

The group will work together to develop the script and the final artistic vision of the music video. Participants will make decisions concerning, among other things:

  • dramaturgy and visual language,
  • locations,
  • costumes and make-up,
  • choreography and movement,
  • cinematography and lighting,
  • equipment,
  • organisation and scheduling of the shooting day,
  • production and budget assumptions.

The next stage will include location research and scouting, preparation of the shooting plan and work with the artist. A full-day shoot will take place on 20 October, followed the next day by editing and colour grading.

This group is intended for people who want to explore not only the aesthetic side of music video production, but also the entire decision-making and production process behind this short-form audiovisual format.
