Hackathon

Hackathon Host: Borys Stokalski

Microsoft and Lenovo, in cooperation with the Film Spring Open Foundation, are organizing the Hackathon “Cinema Is Looking for a New Form. Find It.”

We are not looking for another AI tool. We are looking for a new form of cinema. Over the course of three days, working in teams of filmmakers and developers, we want to explore how artificial intelligence can change the relationship between the viewer and the story. We are looking for teams that will design and build prototypes of new forms of interaction between audiences and storytelling, using both local and cloud-based AI models.

We are aware that fully finished projects may not be completed within three days. That is why one of the most important goals of the Hackathon is not only to search for new ideas, but also to create interdisciplinary teams that will continue developing them after the event has ended.

Below is a complete set of tools, architecture components, and mechanisms provided by Microsoft for building, deploying, and managing local artificial intelligence (On-Device AI) directly on Windows devices, especially Copilot+ PCs equipped with NPUs.

1. Windows AI Foundry & Windows ML (Architecture and Runtime)

  • What it is: A runtime environment and a set of APIs integrated with Windows that allow developers to use NPUs, GPUs, and CPUs to process AI models without sending data to the cloud.
  • Use cases:
    • Developers can integrate AI features such as image recognition, OCR, text summarization, and classification directly into desktop applications.
    • Enables near-zero network latency, offline operation, and enhanced data privacy through a privacy-by-design approach.

2. Development & Phi Silica (Application Development and Model Adaptation)

  • What it is: Development tools that enable the use of Phi Silica — a small language model (SLM) optimized by Microsoft for running on NPUs in Windows.
  • Use cases:
    • LoRA Fine-Tuning: Adapting the lightweight Phi Silica model to specific domain tasks without having to retrain the entire model from scratch.
    • C# / .NET MAUI / WinUI 3 applications: Building native chat applications, AI assistants, virtual advisors, or document analysis tools that can run entirely locally on the user’s computer.

3. Foundry Local, Edge & Browse AI Models (Local Infrastructure and Web)

  • What it is: Runtime components and a catalog of ready-to-use AI models designed to operate locally.
  • Use cases:
    • Foundry Local: Downloading, running, and testing compiled SLM models, including models from the Phi family, in a local environment.
    • Microsoft Edge (Web AI): Using the local NPU/GPU directly from the web browser through APIs such as WebNN, allowing AI-powered web applications to run without relying on cloud servers.
